Holiday in Vendres : The Canal du Midi (Unesco)
The Canal du Midi, 240 km long, was the work of PP Ricquet in the 17th century; it links the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. The banks are an invitation to a hike or a bike ride under the sycamores, or why not a barge trip … because today the Canal du Midi is reserved for pleasuring boating and cruises. Navigating it is no longer just a dream ... you can rent a barge to get the best possible view of the beautiful landscapes. Take it by towns and villages, cross the Orb on a Canal bridge and even climb a hill with the 8 locks in Fonséranes (out of a total of 63 locks).
« The Canal du Midi » and the « Saint Guilhem le Désert » village, built at the bottom of impressive cliffs and a stop-over on the St. James’ Way (Santiago de Compostela), are on the Unesco world heritage list.
