Region of Chorges

A unique region that will seduce you

Between Provence and the northern Alps, amidst valleys, gorges and mountains, far from the hustle and bustle, in a natural setting, 6 km from the village of Chorges.

The Hautes-Alpes, at an altitude of 500 to 4102 m, with abundant snow and a mountain life style, have a Provencal feel in the sunshine and mile summer days (300 days of sunshine per year) and a touch of the accent of Provence caps the mountain dialogue and the local cuisine.

Chorges, perched at 835m, is a town standing on a backdrop of high mountains, clustered around a handsome Romanesque belfry. As you come closer, you will see the Saint Victor church dating from the 12th century, vestiges of the Roman era (Briançon-Arles Roman way) and the Middle Ages (ramparts).

The cobblestone streets, a fountain made in 1548, and a 16th century door will take you back to the peaceful life of the past.

Alongside this rich heritage, Chorges has another undeniable privilege...

In 1955, the dam (an enormous construction 120m high), built to dam the Durance River, and Serre Ponçon Lake, a magnificent crescent-shaped body of water covering plan 3000 (with a capacity of 1271 billion m3 of water) opening the Ubaye Valley to tourism and discovery of an intact, untainted nature.

One cannot tire of admiring the splendor to the Lake in all seasons, at any time.

The Hautes Alpes Region, which used to the most isolated in Europe, today offers a veritable heaven on earth made of peaks, Alpine pastures, forests, waterfalls and white water, where you can indulge in any outdoor sports imaginable.

1000 km of tracks are waiting for you din the Ecrins National Park that is home to chamois, aprax, woodchucks, grouse and 50% of French flora over an area of 100,000 ha.

Embrun, called the « Nice of the Alps », is a fortified city standing on a rocky peak

This small town, rich with its glorious past, deserves a long day’s visit to explore the labyrinth of the pedestrian streets, the pastel or bright coloured facades, the shady squares with many fountains and above all, the Embrun cathedral, Notre-Dame du Réal, a marvel of gothic art classified a historical monument.

Gap, a visit not to be missed on the Napoleon Route between Grenoble and the Mediterranean, welcomes you to its broad pedestrian districts for a long walk of window shopping, and a visit to its museum or a meal in one of its many restaurants.

Nature, Heritage and unrecognized variety, just a short way from Aix en Provence, Marseilles and the Mediterranean and Italy, to be discovered as soon as you can...
